It’s Valentine’s Day today, so let’s take a look at (and above all celebrate) some of the best and most iconic bot lane duos in League of Legends.
We all have that one duo partner we like to queue up with and gain some LP. Most of the time, that duo partner is also a good friend. We will be looking at five iconic botlane duos in competitive League of Legends. These duos either had a special bond, stayed together for a long time or went through a lot together.
We will mostly be looking at the major regions for this one, not so much to the smaller European Regional Leagues or College Leagues. Some of these duos might not sound so familiar to you since some of these players have only competed in the early days of League of Legends. Do not hesitate to look back at some of the matches played by these players, because most of them were in some legendary games. So, without further ado, let us look at the five iconic botlane duos in competitive League of Legends.
Genja & GoZu
This bot lane was known for being very inventive back in the early days of League of Legends. They were a part of the legendary Moscow F1ve roster that dominated the offline circuits in Europe. This team was well known for winning a lot of the Intel Extreme Masters tournaments and always did well internationally. They were one of the favorites to win Worlds season 2 but fell short to the eventual winner. Individually these two players were just average but combined they were masterminds, showing comradery on offline events whilst inventing new item builds and combinations in the botlane.
Yellowpete & Krepo
These two players looked like brothers above all else. They were on another legendary European roster and they laid the foundations for a lot of late game strategies in League of Legends. Although yellowpete always looked like a shy person, it felt like Krepo was his big brother taking him along all these nice trips internationally. They would eventually never win something but they were still winners because they found each other. This whole Counter Logic Gaming Europe roster felt more like a group of friends than just five professional players. They both quit the game at roughly the same time.
Rekkles & Hylissang
The botlane duo that everyone knows in Europe and we always thought would stick together. Playing in a Worlds final under the Fnatic banner, they also played together for almost more than three years. They went through all the good and bad times with Fnatic. From dominating Europe to giving up that spot to G2 Esports. The nicest thing is that they always came back stronger and we saw this as recently as Worlds 2020. They were the big underdog when up against TOP Esports from China in the quarterfinals. In the end it was still Rekkles and Hylissang trying to carry Fnatic and almost succeeding, just falling short 2-3 in a best of 5. They were arguably one of the best duos in the tournament that year.
PraY & Gorilla
Sometimes, a picture says more than a thousand words. PraY and GorillA have played in prestigious tournaments like Worlds, MSI, Rift Rivals and numerous LCK splits. Having reached finals in all these events, they were well known around the world. What people do not often know is that they were not everyone’s first choice to play in a main line-up in Korea, often overlooked in the off-season in their early careers.
However, when they helped create and join the KOO Tigers, it all changed. This line-up consisted of players that did not find a home on other teams but had an incredibly competitive spirit. They went on to surprise the world and PraY & GorillA were at the root of this success. Inventing new botlane combinations on the Worlds’ stage against the best teams in the world like SK Telecom T1. Everyone hurt when it was announced that they could no longer compete together and went their own ways.
Doublelift & Aphromoo
Of course, everybody remembers this “rush hour duo”. They dominated North America for years on Counter Logic Gaming and were good friends in- and outside of the game. Unfortunately, they had a fall-out but that does not mean that they were not close friends once. We might never know what happened between these two, but they gave us some of the most glorious botlane spectacles that North America has ever seen. Hopefully, we have a reunion soon but for now Doublelift has retired and Aphromoo is playing for Dignitas in the LCS.
