VALORANT: Riot discuss 3v3 matches, shorter game modes and Escalation

In a Reddit AMA Riot Games developers talked about the possibility of certain game modes coming to VALORANT, alongside answering questions about Escalation.

One of the first things that was discussed was the possibility of an unranked and competitive game mode which features less rounds, making both ranking up and warming up a little faster and streamlined. Riot producer Jared “Darkhorse4Life” Berbach certainly liked the idea. “This is definitely something we’ve considered and will continue to consider. I think there’s definitely a desire for a shorter form of the standard game mode. Nothing concrete to announce here as of yet, but stay tuned!”

Over time, a lot of players have spoken out about a possible 3 versus 3 or 2 versus 2 game mode that features the same mechanics, format and gameplay elements of the regular matches. According to Darkhorse4Life, they’ve already tested this idea internally. “We’ve prototyped modes like this. Nothing concrete to announce today, but we’re super open to making 3v3 modes in the future. Like you said, these generally work well on smaller map spaces.”

When discussing Escalation, the topic of increasing the player count of the game mode came up to possibly speed up the pace of the game. Riot Designer Kyle “tehleach” Leach talked about the possibility. “We did some testing of 7v7 and it definitely upped the pace on the game. Some people really liked it, some people thought it made an already chaotic mode too chaotic. I felt pretty neutral either way, but the reason we ended up shipping 5v5 was mainly due to party sizes.”
