100 Thieves fined by Riot Games following conflict over ping with coach FrosT
In a back-and-forth exchange, 100 Thieves begrudgingly paid the 5K fine levied by Riot Games.
100 Thieves have recently been fined $5,000 for delaying their match against Immortals in the NA Masters event. Alongside this, the 100 Thieves coach, Hector “FrosT” Rosario has been placed under probation with the possibility of further punishment for allegedly leveraging player’s social media’s social media over Riot Games.
The initial tactical timeout was called over a substantial ping difference between the teams that put 100 Thieves at a significant disadvantage. Whereas most players on Immortals experienced lower pings, the lowest reported being 8 ping, 100 Thieves players ranged in the 80s range. When met with pushback from tournament organizers, FrosT stated that a DC would be far worse for Riot Games than 100 Thieves.
100 Thieves released a full video of the altercation on their twitter page:
Following the match and 100 Thieves’ 2-0 win over Immortals, Riot contacted the organization and informed 100 Thieves’ of their intent to levy a fine against the team. 100 Thieves accepted however rebuffed the below statement made days after the NA Masters final.
We have updated our earlier competitive ruling to provide additional context. Based on the evidence before us, we consider the matter closed. https://t.co/jDO9Q1OCte
The 100 Thieves organization, while still planning on paying the fine, released a counter-statement mere hours after. In which, they stated their dissatisfaction with the tournament organizer and Riot Games’ ‘mischaracterization’ of events with a particular emphasis around FrosT’s verbiage.
Criticism has come out on both sides. Many have gone against Riot for not taking the issue of peek’s advantage seriously whenever it was addressed in the initial announcement of VALORANT as ‘Project A.’ Others, such as esports journalist Richard Lewis, have been critical of FrosT and 100 Thieves’ handling of both the ping situation and response after Riot’s first statement.
All this video shows to me is that the situation could have been defused if the person doing the talking wasn't an egotistical cretin trying to impress the players in the room. Still, it's 100 Thieves so we all have to say "go off king" right?https://t.co/SDYMMGrtAE
With the potential of further suspension may quell anymore defiance from 100 Thieves, the dust may have settled on this controversy but only time will tell.
