Fnatic upset, Astralis and Virtus.pro victorious on day two of Group D
Both NA teams fell in day two while Fnatic were kept from their first win of the ESL Pro League.
Endpoint had a hot start in the series, as the first half of Inferno began with a 10-4 attacker side. Endpoint finished out the map 16-9, Joey “CRUC1AL” Steusel pushing his team forward with 26 total kills and 105 ADR. The second map was slightly more competitive for Fnatic, but once again fell Endpoint’s way. This time Shahar “flameZ” Shushan leading his team.
This was an outstanding win for Endpoint that showed the depth they have on their roster. For Fnatic, this was a disastrous result especially considering their loss to Team Liquid yesterday. Their road to playoffs will only be more difficult as they still have yet to face Astralis and Evil Geniuses, who have proven to be no slouches.
Whereas North America stood tall on day one, day two was quite the inverse as both teams fell starting with Evil Geniuses 1-2 loss to Virtus.pro. Game one on Overpass to end with an OT win for the CIS roster, Dzhami “Jame” Ali and Mareks “YEKINDAR” Galinkskis once again facilitated their win. EG took the second map convincingly 9-16, simply outfragging Virtus.pro as an overwhelming majority of EG’s round wins were by way of eliminations.
Inferno was EG’s last stand, the final map once again going to OT where Owen “oBo” Schlatter had one of his better performances. YEKINDAR’s dominant performance, ending with 30 frags and 11 first bloods, secured Virtus.pro their second win. Though a loss for EG, this could still be viewed through an optimistic lens as they took the IEM Katowice finalists to OT twice and Brehze maintained his incredible performance from day one by once again topfragging with 87 total kills.
Astralis versus Team Liquid, a tale as old as time that ended in an all too familiar 2-0 fashion for the Danish roster. Starting off Overpass with 13-2 defender side, Astralis almost lost control of game one as TL staged an 13 round comeback. Astralis ultimately closed out the game to claim their first victory.
Team Liquid led Dust2 with a slight 8-7 edge, primarily off the efforts of Jake “Stewie2K” Yip and Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski, however fell in a 19-15 OT finish once again. Nicolai “device” Reedtz had an absolute monstrous performance as he ended the series leading in kills, ADR, assits, AWP kills, First blood kills, and overall rating. This was a hard fought first win for Astralis with Device showing his championship winning form.
