Fnatic finds their first win while Virtus.pro takes their first loss
A day of mixed results, Group D showed just how competitive these teams were bound to be with these series.
Losing by mere inches in their series against Virtus.pro yesterday, Evil Geniuses once again failed to convert their excellent play into a win. While Fnatic ultimately won out 2-1, EG put on another great performance despite the result. In map one, Train, EG led on defender side 8-7, though lost control as Jack “Jackinho” Mattsson simply outfragged the NA team in a 5 round streak that led to Fnatic’s first map.
Inferno fell to the side of Evil Geniuses off the back of Tarik “Tarik” Celik, though almost all EG members ended with positive K/Ds and above 50% KASTs. The quickest game of the series, ending 16-7 for EG, Fnatic ultimately claimed the series in the next map. Mirage was led off with a competitive first half, but pulled away as Jackinho once again topfragged and ended with 25 total kills and 98 ADR.
It was close, but we pull through 2-1 in #ESLProLeague 🙌
Certainly not a poor showing from Evil Geniuses, this was another disappointing finish. One of Owen “oBo” Schlatter’s best performances, ending with 63 total kills and the top ADR, EG can at least feel confident going into the NA derby versus Team Liquid.
A bout between the first and second place holders in the group, Astralis ultimately claimed supremacy of Group D with a similar 2-1 victory. Map one, Inferno, featured both teams going on hot streaks and subsequently cooling off, though Astrali ultimately won 16-13. IGL Lukas “gla1ve” Rossander pushed his team to the finish line with 99 ADR and the best overall rating of the game. Train was by far the most contentious game the series, as VP took the OT win 23-25.
Finishing the series on one of Astralis’ best maps, Vertigo, the Danish squad followed the incredibly competitive series with a clean 16-9 win. Only letting VP take two rounds on defender side, Astralis overcame the great individual performances of the CIS roster to take the series.
Endpoint could not ride the high from their upset win over Fnatic for too long as Team Liquid found a 2-0 win to right the ship after their loss to Astralis yesterday. Keith “NAF” Markovic had a great showing on the day as he ended the relatively short series with 46 total frags, ADR, and assists.
Certainly confidence instilling before their game versus EG, Team Liquid are still contending for the top spot in this difficult group.
