CS:GO 101 – How to Play Overpass

Welcome to CS:GO 101, where the basics of CS:GO are explained so you can become a professional player in no time.

Today Overpass will be made crystal clear, handling the basics of how to defend and attack the bomb sites.

A bit of history

Overpass has only been in the game since the Global Offensive edition. Regardless, it has still received plenty of love from Valve and has been extensively tweaked and redesigned since it was added on December 18, 2013. It took about half a year to be added to the Active Duty Group and has been a part of it ever since.

The A Site

Defending the A site will be easy in one regard: the moment the game starts, you are already on it. Logically however, this pushes you further in the beginning. Straight ahead of you lie two paths. You can move ahead past the Toilets or through them, or go into the long stretch of park that starts at the corner of the bombsite, AKA A Long. At the end of the day both positions work dynamically with each other.

From Toilets you can quickly go through the side of the building to support a teammate on A Long. The opposite is just as true. It is also advisable to position one player in the Tunnels. This will keep the middle tunnel area under surveillance. That way the Ts will not have free reign to run into the B site. Back at the toilets position, the enemy will have to go through either of two points. You can expect them through the stairs or past the narrow part in the area with benches, called Party. Do not forget that the Toilets building serves as cover when engaging with an opponent.

Attacking this site is all about controlling the way leading up to the site, combined with well placed smokes. The stretches towards the site are big funnel points, so the essence lies in making sure the way is clear. A teammate flashing you in to gradually clear the rest of the bombsite, plus a smoke in the bank and next to the bins will work wonders. Also remember that you can plant the bomb in front of toilets and then just use this defensive position against the counter-terrorists.

The B Site

As a counter-terrorist, this one is all about knowing your chokepoints. Provided you do not get flanked completely, the Ts will be coming from two places. Through Monster (the tunnel with a monster sprayed on top of it) or Water. For Monster it might be tempting to hold a close angle, but it is better to stay further back on the site, behind the barrels hidden in the corner for example. Otherwise you are fighting at a severe disadvantage.

For Water you can be pushed up a bit, seeing as the terrorists have to get through another tunnel first. Utility is your friend here to hold them off just a tad longer. An incendiary right in the middle will delay them unless they cancel it out. Otherwise a flash behind you is perfect to give you those precious seconds to escape and fall back on the site behind cover. Those seconds will give your teammates time to rotate around, either to Water or onto places like Heaven (the railing above the site, towards CT spawn).

You might be thinking, as a terrorist, this is just impossible. It is not however. The B site relies on you and your teammates being one cohesive unit. In the beginning, with your pistol round, this just means running into the site and hoping for the best. The moment utility comes into play, you need to line it up perfectly, and time it down to the second. Flash each other in and take away vision from the CTs. If you catch two frags, the site is basically in your hands.

The B site is littered with these narrow tunnels to get onto it, but those are the only barriers to success. If you can push through these and immediately frag out the enemy, the site can be taken in the blink of an eye. A molotov onto barrels, a smoke in Heaven and the back of the site, boom. That allows you to plant and take up your own positions onto the site to play out the afterplant. Then you can expect your opponents out of water or rotating onto the site from A.
