Twitch overhauls DMCA rules, change up strike system with ‘Repeat Infringer Policy’
In an attempt to tackle the DMCA issue the website is facing, they now updated their DMCA rules and their strike system.
One of the biggest things to come out of the overhauled ruleset is the system of the ‘repeat offenders’. In this system the strikes that are assigned to an account after breaking the DMCA rules are no longer permanent but will only remain in place for a while to ensure that the account is more careful going forward. The system itself is sort of reminiscent of the one that YouTube employs when it comes to strikes on videos.
Twitch has ENTIRELY re-written their DMCA Guidelines Page.
Two BIG notes:
1. 3 stikes officially constitute a ‘repeat infringer’
Only when a third strike is assigned is an account deemed to be a ‘repeat offender’ and does it risk termination by Twitch itself. “We will terminate an account holder’s access to the Twitch service if that user is determined by Twitch to be a ‘repeat infringer’ of copyrighted works on the service – under our policy, a user will be considered a repeat infringer if they accrue three copyright strikes.”
In any case, this strike system offers a little more transparency when it comes to the inner workings of Twitch and should help out creators in avoiding bans or even complete termination of their account. The guidelines surrounding DMCA on Twitch remain the same, which means channels and creators will still have to abide by them.
