Twitch experiments with new Stream Display Ads to mixed community reactions
After lots of criticism in regards to disruptive advertising on the platform, Twitch might finally be looking to shake things up on the advertising front.
Twitch has announced they’re experimenting with a new type of ads called Stream Display Ads. The idea behind the ads is to provide a better viewer experience. “These are less disruptive ads that allow viewers to see and hear Creators while being displayed. Creators will receive ad revenue for each SDA shown. This is an optional feature.”
Ads remain an important part of Twitch – Stream Display Ads were created with the feedback we have gathered from the community.
We would love to hear your thoughts on this new format. Please head over to UserVoice! 📣 https://t.co/Dbo9vbyb5b
The Stream Display Ads will be displayed in the style of a banner that surrounds the content you’re watching or is basically just next to it, allowing you to keep watching. According to Twitch these ads will usually take about 10 seconds to display and can’t be closed. Twitch also said that there won’t be more than eight of these ads showing up in an hour of broadcast, but did say these numbers are still liable to change.
If this is gonna net in MORE ads, then I’m not okay with that. It’s not less disruptive if it’s just going alongside the disruptive ones.
While many welcome the changes to the advertising, others are more critical. Some people are afraid that the introduction of this new form of advertising might result in more ads being shown overall, while others are still not convinced the current problem of disruptive ads is going to be solved. In any case, nobody likes advertisements breaking up the broadcast they’re watching, but this might be a welcome middle ground if incorporated correctly.
