Will Vitality upset Fnatic and can Misfits topple Rogue? – A first look at the LEC Summer Split Playoffs

13/08 – Rogue versus Misfits

The first match of the LEC Summer Split 2021 playoffs is the one between Rogue and Misfits Gaming. Two teams who’ve impressed everyone throughout the regular season, albeit in different ways, as both teams did have different priorities coming into this split. While Rogue is looking to bounce back and show they’re the best, Misfits Gaming came knocking at the door of the best teams, looking to show they belong.

First, let’s take a look at Rogue. It’s hard not to be impressed with the play that Rogue has put on the rift. With a methodical playstyle that’s often reminiscent of LCK teams, they’ve seemingly been able to dismantle almost any opponent they’ve faced. With a star-studded bot lane in the form of Hans Sama and arguably the best jungler in the LEC right now in Inspired, they strike fear into any team’s hearts.

Rogue decided to pick Misfits Gaming as their opponents. Misfits Gaming came into the split swinging. Jungler Razork stepped up big, top laner HiRit is trading blows with the best of them and mid laner Vetheo looks like the next big star mid laner from Europe. Though they faltered a little towards the end of the season, the roster knows each other well and has worked hard on getting where they are now.

Prediction: There’s no doubt that Rogue is the big favorite going into this series, but counting out Misfits is delusional. We’re fully expecting them to take at least a game of Rogue, perhaps capitalizing on Rogue’s biggest weakness, their mid-game insecurities. Still, Rogue should come out on top. We’re predicting a 3-1 Rogue victory.

14/08 – MAD Lions versus G2 Esports

Now this is a matchup with some history behind it already. MAD Lions moved past G2 Esports last split and ended up winning it all, representing Europe on the MSI 2021 stage, something they had to recover from throughout the season, but they yet again found their better form towards the end of the regular season. They’ll find a very motivated opponent in the form of G2 Esports, however.

G2 Esports didn’t have the showing everyone thought they’d have in the Spring Split and early on in the Summer Split, they also looked a bit shaky before picking up the pace. The pieces within G2 Esports finally seem to be clicking, with their bot lane as their pride and joy. With Caps playing on a high level again, they’ll be more than a match for MAD Lions and if they want that shot at winning Worlds, like they said they would, they will have to push MAD aside.

Prediction: Probably the hardest match to call looking at the entirety of this playoff weekend. Yet, with FG2 Esports’ current momentum, we would say they’ve got the advantage coming into the series. A clean 3-0 doesn’t seem likely at all, as MAD Lions is way too talented of a side to let that happen. We’re expecting a tight 3-2 victory from G2 Esports.

15/08 – Fnatic versus Team Vitality

The match between Fnatic and Vitality will for sure be delivering some fireworks. Fnatic comes into this series with a whole lot to prove, especially after ending the regular season in a rather lacklustre fashion, despite looking quite strong throughout. It does look like Fnatic is plagued by this inconsistency on a bigger scale, which might in part stem from some inexperience from top laner Adam and Bwipo’s swap to a new role in the jungle. Despite all this, Fnatic has an amazing bot lane and mid laner Nisqy has stepped up when his team needed him.

Vitality just barely grasped the final playoff slot and hasn’t really looked all that convincing throughout the season, despite having some solid pieces in their roster. Crownshot and Labrov have shown to be able to carry games and Selfmade (ex-Fnatic) and LIDER do have the potential to be a strong jungle-mid duo. They however suffer from inconsistency as well and can be quite predictable in their game plan.

Prediction: On paper, Fnatic should still have it in the bag, but information has come out they weren’t able to have all the practice they wanted, which might give Vitality an edge when it comes to prep. Despite all this, we’re still Fnatic to come out on top. We’re predicting a 3-1 Fnatic victory.
