What we want to see in Call of Duty: Vanguard

Call of Duty has steadily added installments to the franchise since 2003, and now have a total of 24 games under their belt. Now widely known as one of the most popular, global game franchises in the world, every CoD game has momentous expectations to live up to. Still, every CoD game gives us plenty to enjoy but also room to build on for the next one to come. With Vanguard quickly approaching, being released on November 5th, here is what we want to see in the game.

Better anti-cheat software

One massive problem Call of Duty multi-player is seeing right now, both in Blacks Ops Cold War and Warzone, is the growing prevalence of hackers. These days, it is incredibly difficult to find a lobby without one person using some sort of exploit. Generally, this makes the game far harder to play and makes it far less fun, leading to worse conditions in the multi-player eco-system.

Sledgehammer Games seems to already be working on a solution. Just recently, new anti-cheat softwares have been added to Warzone, automatically banning thousands of accounts guilty of using exploits. Supposedly, this will be used in Vanguard as well, and will hopefully give the game a better start than its predecessors.

More meta diversity

All games suffer from the development of a meta, or the most effective tactic available. In almost every CoD game, one gun has risen above the rest and become the most widely used, with others being only worse replicas of it. In Warzone, DMRs ruled lobbies for months on end without any mitigation. Vanguard can drastically help its replayability with regular patching that prevents any prolonged meta. CoD games tend to get less and less support as the year goes on and the next iteration, but more care given to the current title would be a refreshing change.

A new look for a similar setting

This is not the first time Call of Duty has visited the World War II setting. The first CoD games were all set during the time frame, World at War was perhaps their most notable entry in the era, and CoD WWII was a rather forgettable entry. The point is, CoD has routinely went to the World War well though to varying degrees of success.

There are only so many times a player can pick up a Thompson or PPSH and feel the same level of excitement or engagement. Obviously constrained to the ties of historical accuracy, CoD desperately needs to find a new, more engaging way of presenting this all too familiar setting.

CoD’s Campaign – Often overlooked

Call of Duty is first and foremost a multi-player game. Though some iterations of the franchise, such as Modern Warfare, gave us some memorable campaigns, this has largely been overlooked. Vanguard has promised a much wider campaign that views many different theaters of war based from the perspective of real soldiers. This is certainly a good set up, but execution will decide if Vanguard will be one for the history books, or another forgettable feature.
