Opinion: Why Riot should bring back Dominion

Dominion released on the League of Legends client back in 2011. Dominion was revolutionary in the fact that it offered an alternative to the traditional summoner’s rift experience. The game mode was a capture-and-hold 5v5 where players competed on a dynamic yet familiar map as buffs, capture points, and quests appeared across the map. Unfortunately, the mode was retired in 2016 and players have never been able to play the mode since.

Where are all the game modes?

Riot Games has a long history of taking away their game modes. Twisted Treeline similarly offered an interesting take on League of Legends but was also retired. Now, League of Legends faces a problem. There are astonishingly few game modes for players to enjoy beyond the two basics: summoners rift and ARAMs.

These two mainstay game modes have been around for years, but no other version of the game has stuck around for as long. Occasionally there is a rotating third version such as URF or All-For-One, though they only stay for a limited time. This contributes to a severe lack of diversity in League of Legends. Keeping a third game mode, even if the slot is rotating, would give veteran and new players a new way of experiencing the game.

There’s no mode like Dominion

Dominion offered a fast paced game that no other mode has been able to replicate. Games typically averaged from 15 to 20 minutes and promoting a skirmish heavy play style around the control points. Game modes, such as ARAM, have attempted to recreate this feeling however no other game mode has been able to match the pace of Dominion. Champions in Dominion also felt different, as the fast pace demanded that every champion be a stronger version of themselves. Playing a game mode where every champion was the most over-powered version of themselves.

Dominion offered a fast, casual game mode for players who don’t have the time to commit to full 45 minute to an hour game. It also offered a reprieve for avid ranked players, either giving an opportunity to warm up or a chance to take a break between ranked games. Dominion occupied a very unique space in a familiar setting, one that has not been filled ever since the game mode was retired.

Will we ever see Dominion again?

Fans have recently been more vocal in advocating for the return of past game modes, including Dominion and Twisted Treeline. Riot Games has generally had a good track record of listening to their audiences and incorporating feedback into the game. With the 2022 Pre-season rapidly approaching, it may be the best time to re-implement Dominion back into the rotation.

It may be unlikely that we will ever see Dominion back as a permanent game mode in the League of Legends rotation. With more support over social media and community forms, it is entirely possible that we could see the return of Dominion in some form.
