E3 2022 could be cancelled

Earlier in the year the Entertainment Software Association stated that E3 2022 would be a digital only event for the upcoming year. The last in-person E3 conference took place in 2019, as in 2020 the event was outright cancelled and in the following year the event transitioned into a digitally exclusive event.

ESA issued a statement confirming that E3 would certainly not be held in-person, but gave some hope that the event would still go on even if digitally. ESA stated, “Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. We are nonetheless excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

The rise of the Omicron COVID-19 variant has resulted in the lockdown of plenty of cities, and wrought a new wave of protective regulations across the United States. Typically held in Los Angeles, California, the city has seen the highest spike in COVID cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

The entire event may be in danger though, as games journalist Jeff Grubb alleged that the E3, both physically and digitally, will be cancelled. Grubb claimed that Geoff Keighley will likely continue to put on the Summer Games Fest. Though this has been unconfirmed by E3 or any partnered game companies, E3 2022 could be the second conference to be cancelled.
