Just twelve hours out from their first game at Worlds 2021, Fnatic made the shocking announcement that its starting ADC, Upset, would not play for the entire tournament. After that point, the LEC organization struggled throughout its relatively short stint at Worlds. The reason behind Upset’s departure was only vaguely alluded to, however former Fnatic toplaner Adam has spoken up about the situation.
In a TwitLonger post, Adam criticized Upset’s reason for leaving the team on the eve of the biggest esports tournament in the world. Adam stated “Upset just left to join his girlfriend because she felt bad to be alone, and maybe I’m wrong? Anyway those were the last words he said to us before he left us one day before the Worlds.” Adam also stated that after Worlds he asked for further elaborated, but that Upset refused to clarify.
The French toplaner also explained the context behind his own departure from Fnatic. “When I learned that FNC was trying to replace me, I honestly felt like a betrayal” Adam wrote “Upset tried to recruit Alphari (behind my back of course). Later I learned that he was already trying to change topside including Nisqy.”
Upset has since drafted a response to Adam’s claims. The German ADC rebuffed Adam’s statement by writing “Saying the last thing I told my team that my wife is just feeling bad so I need to leave is an outright lie.” Upset wrote that he wanted to keep the ‘traumatic events’ private as it was difficult enough on its own.
Fnatic has yet to comment on the situation as of yet, and will likely attempt to remain a neutral party. For the 2022 LEC season, it seems that Upset will remain on the starting roster while Adam will find a new home in BDS.
