The Smash World Tour will be back in 2021, as the fighting game competition struggled to spread its wings during 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On their website, the Smash World Tours gives more information about the format they’ll be using. The competition will be making use of both region-locked online qualifiers as well as in-person events, those being regional finals and general invitationals. The organizers see this format more as a bridge between “While we can’t assume large scale community events will be back by a certain point in 2021, we of course are excited for their eventual return!“
They also went on to make a distinction for Melee and Ultimate. “For Ultimate, region-locked Online Qualifiers will determine who advances to our Regional Finals. For Melee, a panel of community leaders representing regions across the globe will select Regional Finalists based on tournament results in 2020 and 2021. “
On the website fans can already find some of the events that are upcoming, such as multiple online qualifiers for the regional events for Smash Brothers Ultimate. “Due to COVID-19, the Smash World Tour was not able to be composed of community events in 2021 like in its original format. Instead, this year we are spotlighting and promoting community events and initiatives at each Tour stop.”
