You won’t be able to immediately hop into ranked yet, as it’s currently entering a preview phase which sees players being invited directly. The developers did share some updates on how everything will work, however.
Placement Battles & Ranking
Ranked play will start out with around five placement matches, which will grant you an early rank. Once you’ve got a rank, you can start climbing, as you’ll gain Ranked Points for winning matches. Each rank comes with a whole host of rewards, which makes the grind even more attractive. “Winning Ranked games will earn you Rank Points, and by the same token, losing games will result in losing Rank Points. Try your hardest to secure a Conquest, Sacred, or Wonder victory to ascend the ranks!”
These are the ranks you’ll be able to achieve, lowest to highest:
- Bronze (I, II, III)
- Silver (I, II, III)
- Gold (I, II, III)
- Platinum (I, II, III)
- Diamond (I, II, III)
- Conqueror (I, II, III)
Exclusive rewards & testing
Finishing the season in a certain rank gives you some exclusive rewards, such as monuments to use in your town center and options to change your player profile to reflect your rank. As the 1v1 ranked preview is currently still in a testing phase with selected players, some things are still liable to change, as the developers are gathering feedback to better the experience. Let’s hope ranked play can scratch more of that competitive itch in Age of Empires IV.
