Additional information
You won’t need an extremely new phone to play the game, but Pokémon does need your phone to be relatively up to date. Even more important than the specifications of your phone however is your internet connection.
Make sure you’ve got a solid 3G, 4G or 5G connection and a decent data plan to not run out of data. Niantic, the developer behind Pokémon GO also recommends at least 2GB of RAM on your phone, but more would be helpful and would make the game run more smoothly.
On Android phones
