Commonwealth Games 2022 to feature esports titles as opening event
To clarify, esports won’t be a medal event, but there’s discussion about the possibility of it becoming one by 2026. In this case, esports will be the pilot event to the Commonwealth Games, which will feature three separate titles. These titles have not been announced to the public yet and more details are said to follow soon, but there’s heavy speculation that Dota 2 will be one of the three tiles featured.
“I am delighted that we are announcing the first Commonwealth esports championships and Commonwealth esports forum to take place in Birmingham this summer,” CGF President, Dame Louise Martin, says. “Esports is continuing to grow dramatically in terms of popularity and participation, particularly amongst young people, and we are continuing to look at ways to explore how it can align with the Commonwealth Sports Movement.”
While the Commonwealth Games might not be the pinnacle for athletes in the world of esports – it’s inclusion and recognition is a giant leap towards changing the way we perceive esports.
While no medals will be awarded to the esports players and teams that are participating, this could set a huge precedent when it comes to esports getting more mainstream visibility. With the Olympic Games still refusing to include esports in the line-up, events and occasions such as these could be instrumental in swaying opinions.
