Dota 2 Winter Major reportedly to be replaced by Regional Finals

During the “We Say Things” podcast hosted by SUNSfan and Synderen, new information regarding the previously cancelled Major has surfaced.

Regional Finals instead of Major

According to the podcast’s information the regional finals will be held over two weekend in February with 3 regions playing each weekend. Participants are rumoured to be the Top 4 of each region’s upper division. The winners and runner-ups of these finals will be awarded DPC points and prize money ($100,000 distributed in each region). If the details are true, Valve has reverted course from the initially planned re-distribution of DPC points to the remaining two Majors.

Changes to the format of The International

The podcast moved on to also state that Valve will make changes to the format of TI. An expansion to 20 teams is in the cards with the last two spots decided by a last chance LAN qualifier. This tournament will feature the second and third-place teams from each regional qualifier for a total of 12 teams fighting over the new slots.

This change leads to the TI format to now feature two 10 team groups with the bottom two eliminated at the conclusion of the group stage.

While Valve has not announced anything yet, SUNSfan stated that the teams have already been informed and that the official news are imminent.
