Furia upset Navi while Cloud9 still searches for a win

The second day of Group C saw a major upset

Cloud9’s Colossus project have seen incredible setbacks and shortcomings, which has continued into the ESL endeavor.  In the first map, Overpass, Gambit led 11-4 by the end of the first half and it appeared as though Cloud9 would once again concede a map. Cloud9 staged an incredible 12 round win streak comeback however led by William “mezii” Merriman who found 27 frags and 99.8 ADR.

Cloud9 was unable to repeat this miracle performance across the following two maps. Gambit convincingly won Vertigo (16-8) and Dust2 (16-7) to claim the top spot. IEM Katowice MVP, Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov found 63 total kills, 22 coming off the AWP and averaging 88 ADR. Gambit has so far run with the momentum from IEM Katowice, competing for the top spot of Group C.

The biggest upset, perhaps so far in the entire group stage, came as Furia managed to 2-0 Navi. Falling behind on both maps after the first round, their first comeback on Mirage witnessed a flawless 11 round win streak ending the map 10-16. Navi must have felt serious deja vu as after once again garnering a 10-5 lead at the half, Furia won 10 consecutive rounds.

Though Aleskandr “s1mple” Kostyliev topfragged once again with 43 total kills, the clutch performances of Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato and Yuri “yuurih” Santos largely propelled Furia across these two maps by way of their second half performances. Now at the top of standings alongside Gambit, Furia have set themselves up well to qualify for the playoffs if they can close out their next games.

The final series of the day saw one of the longest match-ups of the tournament as the two remaining Brazilian teams in Group C, MIBR and TeamOne, clashed. MIBR ultimately claimed the victory, Marcelo “chelo” Cespedes finding an astounding 78 total kills across the three map series. Equalizing their series and leaving TeamOne winless at the bottom of the standings.
