Esport is so much more than just the game played competitively. Storylines, emotions, players and legendary moments all come together to give shape to our passion. Every week we will take a closer look at one of these. This week’s legend is Faker.
Lee “Faker” Sang Hyeok is the greatest League of Legends player of all time. The midlaner is not only famous for his agressive playstyle but also his absurd versatility and hero pool.
Faker’s career began 2013 with SK Telecom T1. At just 16 years old the midlaner played in the second roster of T1 next to players Jung “Impact” Eon Yeong, Bae “Bengi” Seong Ung, Chae “Piglet” Gwang Jin and Lee “PoohManDu” Jeong Hyeon.
OLYMPUS Champions Spring 2013 was Faker’s breakthrough. While T1’s first team barely scraped into playoffs by a single point, Faker’s T1 dominated their group and snatched the bronze medal. Surpassing and soon replacing the first team with his teammates Faker’s legendary rise began.
SK Telecom T1 and Faker
With the promotion to the first team T1 and Faker began to go on a tear. Ever since they have dominated not only the Korean LoL scene (nine LCK titles so far), they also crowned themselves world champions a staggering three times (2013, 2015, 2016). Ever since he started his competitive career in LoL he has stayed with T1 and was rewarded in 2020 by becoming part-owner of his team while still dominating scene.
Faker’s awards
As the midlaner delivered time and again he started a collection of MVP and KDA awards over the years:
2017 – LCK Spring 2017 – Midlane KDA
2016 – 2016 World Championship – Finals MVP
2015 – LCK Summer 2015 – Playoffs MVP
2014 – Champions Winter 2013-2014 – Midlange KDA
2014 – Champions Winter 2013-2014 – Season MVP
2013 – Champions Summer 2013 – Midlange KDA
2013 – Champions Summer 2013 – Season MVP
Faker established himself as the face of LoL and became a superstar. Not just in his Korean home country but all throughout Asia, Faker was the name people aspired to become one day. As the championships kept coming Faker also grew his brand and became a sought after player for advertisements even in main stream media.
Just to give you an idea of his prevalence, just this April he got selected as the face of an ice cream brand in Korea.
Faker’s tears
But for all of his triumphs the “Demon King” as he is often called is still human. Even with all his achievements he still wants more and is driven to prove himself again and again. His drive and passion for the game are the real deal and his reaction to a 0-3 loss in the finals of Worlds 2017 really says it all:
As awe-inspiring as he is, even Faker is still human and it is that combination of prodigious skill and pure passion for his game that turns him into an esport legend above others.
