Esports Legends: Stewie2K

With one Major already in the pocket, Jacky ‘Stewie2K’ Yip is looking for more. What makes this young man such a force to be reckoned with?

Many of the best players have played the game for many years before actually turning professional. Yet Stewie2K only started playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive about a year before starting to compete and working his way up to join some of the biggest organisations out there. Of course he had played some 1.6 way before but such a quick adaptation to a new title and becoming a professional player at it is just mind boggling.

Young and promising

Within just a year of competing on various teams, Stewie2K was picked up by Splyce. His stay at the team would be quite short-lived however, with some other big teams already eyeing up the young but promising player. Without any big titles to his name, Stewie2K was picked up by Cloud9 just a month after joining Splyce.

Cloud9 would go through some more roster swaps during the year of 2016 but they would go on to have some success. The first victory came quite quickly after Stewie2K joined the roster, with them winning at the iBUYPOWER Invitational 2016 Spring. Not the biggest event but it was a start nonetheless. Towards the end of the year the real achievement came through. After topping the group stage of the ESL Pro League Season 4, they of course were one of the title contenders at the Pro League Finals. The event featured some lost maps and struggles, but after getting through the group stage decently and picking up the pace in the playoffs, Stewie2K was able to win his first S-tier title.

FaZe Up (or down)

Despite not really having the best showing at the first two Majors he played in, it seemed like a matter of time before the talented player would eventually take one home. Despite not really winning many big titles after their Pro League victory, the Cloud9 roster remained competitive and able to play well when needed. At the ELEAGUE Major: Boston 2018, the team had to battle their way through the New Challengers stage first, only to play another Swiss group stage after.

The first one went amazingly well, taking the easy route with a 3-0 score. The New Legends stage was a bit harder however. After losing their first two matches, Stewie2K and his team had their backs against the wall. They were able to bounce back even stronger though, picking up three dominating wins to eventually make it into the playoffs.

At the start of the playoffs it seemed like smooth sailing. First taking a commanding win over G2 Esports, followed by a decent performance against SK Gaming. The grand final was quite different however. With FaZe Clan seeming strong throughout their path in the Major, there was a big chance Cloud9 could still lose. After dropping the first map 14-16 but winning the second, all eyes were on Inferno. After a gruelling overtime, with an intense AWP play from Stewie2K on the B-bombsite to actually bring it to extended time, Cloud9 would eventually close it and win their Major.

A Brazilian adventure

Stewie2K would not stay with the Major winning team for long though, as he moved to SK Gaming just two months later, which would transition into MIBR soon after. His time with the team did bring him some victories at for instance the ZOTAC Cup Masters 2018 and a second place at the ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals. Towards the end of the year he did get a more tempting offer.

Liquid Stewie

Just before the end of 2018, Stewie2K transitioned into a new team. One that would prove to be very successful in their first year, as Stewie2K took his first title within the first month after joining the team. He would also rush towards an Intel Grand Slam by winning IEM Sydney, DreamHack Masters Dallas and the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals. Later 2019 continued with some more big wins, yet in 2020 things turned a bit more sour.

Partially due to the pandemic and lack of LAN-events, Stewie2K and his team were only able to win the ESL Pro League Season 11: North America, often getting second at later events. Things are looking up with the team however, now more often residing at Liquid’s office in Utrecht, meaning they are able to compete with the best teams in the world.
