In a deal that might have big repercussions for the fighting games scene, Sony has acquired the Evo fighting games championship series.
Both of the companies announced their partnership through a statement, with Sony acquiring the Evolution Championship Series. When it comes to the co-founders of Evo, Tony and Tom Cannon, Sony assured fans they’ll still remain involved within the partnership as advisors. The total amount of money involved in the deal was not disclosed by the parties.
In the statement they put out, EVO co-founders Tony and Tom Cannon talked about the future and why the partnership with Sony is something to get excited about. “In order to deliver on the trust you have all put in Evo, we realize that we need an experienced strategic partner who truly respects the spirit of the FGC. This is why we’re excited to announce that Evo has become part of the joint partnership of Sony Interactive Entertainment and RTS.”
Evo had to fight through its share of trouble in 2020, with a slew of cancelled events through the COVID-19 pandemic and the firing of their CEO Joey Cuellar following sexual misconduct allegations. In the statement, Evo went on to announce that there will be an Evo online in 2021. “We’re thrilled to work with the teams at PlayStation and RTS to bring you Evo 2021 Online this august, more information on this event will follow.”
