FC Barcelona joins League of Legends esports by acquiring Superliga spot

It took some time, but FC Barcelona is finally dipping it’s toe in the waters of League of Legends. The Spanish football club will fill in the empty spot which arose when S2V eSports announced their departure from the Superliga. After weeks of negotiations, Barcelona managed to come to an agreement with Mediapro, the entity in charge of managing the Spanish regional League of Legends league.

The Superliga counts as one of the strongest regional competitions in League of Legends, not solely since the current two-time LEC champion MAD Lions used to be a part of the league. The audience reach is also pretty huge, and Spanish fans are known for their amazing passion for all kinds of sports, including esports.

Barcelona was not the only organization interested in the open vacancy in the Superliga. Sevilla FC and Case Esports also wanted to sit at the table, but in the end the bid of 200.000 euros from the Catalan powerhouse won the battle.

What’s next?

There is no information yet about possible player and staff signings, but rumors go Barcelona is already quite busy with those. It will also be interesting to see how the current financial situation of the football club will influence the duration of their stay in League of Legends, since the average budget of a League of Legends team in the Superliga is around 300.000 euros per year.
