G2 Esports & 100 Thieves shine in the first day of VCT Masters Berlin
VCT Masters Berlin kicked off today as three groups saw their first matches. 100 Thieves and Acend had dominate starts to their Masters run, sweeping their respective opponents. G2 had a much more difficult series against the South Korean second seed, F4Q, but ultimately prevailed. With many more teams still to play, this what we have learned about the the first six teams.
What is the identity of G2 Esports?
G2 Esports have had a storied history in VALORANT despite the scene being so young. In the pre-VCT era, G2 dominated the Ignition Series, sweeping nearly every event and holding a win-streak only comparable to Vision Strikers. G2 went through a dark though, and tried out several iterations of their roster before landing on the team currently competing in Berlin.
There have been several massive changes, as former Heretic members Auni “AvovA” Chahade and Žygimantas “nukkye” Chmieliauskas have since floruished in their roles on G2. The veteran leadership of Oscar “Mixwell” Colocho, now off the Jett Operator role, also seems to be propelling this new version of G2.
100 Thieves – A sleeper pick to win it all?
100 Thieves find themselves in one of the more difficult groups, facing off against Gambit and Crazy Raccoons. The NA second seed found a convincing win over the LATAM team Havan Liberty to start off their run. 100 Thieves showed that what works in NA can also work iternationally, as they ran their infamous KAY/O composition to a victory.
Ethan “Ethan” Arnold and Peter “Asuna” Mazuryk were the stars of today. Both dominated across the two map series and ultimately found 100 Thieves’ first international win. Moving forward, 100 Thieves now await either Gambit or Crazy Raccoons in the upper bracket.
