GeT_RiGhT – The 4 Stages of his CS:GO career

One major title, 14 years of competing at the highest level and a legendary LAN-streak. Christopher ‘GeT_RiGhT’ Alesund, one of the best known players in CounterStrike history has concluded his competitive career and is pursuing full time content creation. What made this man so great? And what were some of his most memorable moments?

The list of tournament achievements seems to go on forever in his seemingly never-ending career. Yet after stepping down from the Dignitas roster last year, Christopher ‘GeT_RiGhT’ Alesund has quit competitive play. GeT_RiGhT dared to show his emotions more than others and was the best player in 2013 and 2014 according to HLTV, but his career started way earlier than that.

1. Blast from the past

Starting as a teenager, GeT_RiGhT was able to climb the Swedish scene quite rapidly. In 2007 he started to compete regularly in the many offline events mainly being held in Sweden followed by some more international events the year after. The first big one was the Intel Extreme Masters II in Hannover, where he joined up with SK Gaming to eventually place fourth. The real growth came in 2009 though, when he was picked up by Fnatic and joined some already legendary players. He won the Intel Extreme Masters III and continued to go on and win many more during his almost two year stay with the organisation. 

In 2011 he moved homes and joined up with another well known brand in esports: SK Gaming. He once more showed the world that Swedish CS was on another level and managed to stay a dominant factor in CounterStrike 1.6 until the release of CounterStrike: Global Offensive.

2. The 87-0 Legacy

As cryptic as the number above might seem, many CS fans will know what it means. At the release of CS:GO, there was one team to beat. With the resurrection of an old organisation called Ninjas in Pyjamas, the longest winning streak in the history of CS was born. Online they could sometimes be beaten, but at LAN-events GeT_RiGhT and his team went on to win 87 maps in a row. For half a year they were unbeatable, only losing against Virtus Pro in the StarLadder StarSeries V twice, both times with a 0-2 score in maps which doesn’t do justice to how close the maps actually were. 

Despite losing an almost unbelievable streak, NiP was still the strongest team in the world. They managed to go on and win many more events throughout 2013 and seemed to be among the favourites to win the first ever Major in CS:GO at DreamHack Winter 2013.

3. Building up to a Major win

At the end of 2013 the first Major was to be held in Jönköping with the world eager to see who would be able to call themselves the first Major champions. NiP played well, winning their group and winning with a 2-1 scoreline in the playoffs twice. Yet in the grand final GeT_RiGhT’s old organisation Fnatic was too strong. 

A somewhat similar thing happened at the next major of EMS One Katowice 2014, where they fell short of Virtus Pro in the final. NiP was not as unbeatable as before, but they were still very much in the mix to win tournaments. They showed just that in August of 2014 by taking revenge on Fnatic. At the ESL One: Cologne 2014 Major, NiP didn’t top their group for the first time but were able to do well in the playoffs. Despite having some incredible matches that could have easily turned out differently, they were able make it to the finals and secured their first Major title. Unfortunately for GeT_RiGhT this was the only one he would win as he placed second again in the two Majors after. He and his team were unable to make into a grand final of a Major since.

4. Old friends together again

GeT_RiGhT and NiP had more difficulty staying at the top in recent years. A lot of people were shocked and hopeful however at the start of 2020, when GeT_RiGhT left NiP to join Dignitas with most of the 87-0 era members. Due to a great lack of LAN events due to the pandemic, the revitalized team was unable to attain their goal of once more ruling the CS world. Towards the end of the year GeT_RiGhT took a step back from the team and has recently announced to pursue a career as content creator.
