Hackers break into EA servers and steal data from FIFA 21, The Sims and Battlefield
Hackers were able to get into the EA servers and managed to get away with over 790 gigabytes of data. The story was first reported by Vice Motherboard.
The hackers posted to online forums, saying they stole (parts of) the source code from the FIFA 21 Frostbite engine and the code used for making a connection to the matchmaking server. The source code and tools for the Frostbite engine they managed to steal are also used in games such as Battlefield. Other stolen information includes patented frameworks and SDKs (Software Development Kits) that developers use to develop the games.
Hackers have broken into gaming giant Electronic Arts and stolen a wealth of game source code and related internal tools, VICE has learned. https://t.co/kTYLwlEdL3
An EA spokesperson confirmed the incident to Vice Motherboard. “We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy”
EA went on to say they’ve been increasing and fortifying their security measures to ensure this won’t happen again, as well as contacting law enforcement to launch a criminal investigation. The hackers themselves have been posting screenshots to forums and are trying to sell the information to interested buyers.
