Original article from September 14 below:
The Play-Ins for this year’s League of Legends World Championship are rapidly approaching. Before the teams go head to head, they still need to determine their opponents. Here is everything you need to know about the group draw of 2020’s Worlds.

As is tradition Riot will host an elaborate show for the group draw. The teams will have ample time to study their opponents after the group draw finishes.

The live show will be streamed on Twitch and YouTube:

Format changes for Play-Ins

With only 22 teams this year instead of the usual 24 the developer has also changed the format slightly. With only 10 instead of 12 Play-In teams the format will now feature two groups of five teams each playing a single round robin. Winners of each group will qualify directly to the group stage while the last place will be eliminated.

Surviving teams ranked second to fourth in their group will then proceed to the gauntlet playing two rounds of Best-of-5’s to determine the final two group stage teams. Third and fourth ranked teams play each other first before facing off against the runner-ups of the groups for a slot in the group stage of Worlds 2020.

Seeding for the Group stage

The groups at Worlds 2020 will be determined by random draw out of four different pools. First seeds will feature the winners of the major regional league (LPL, LEC, LCK, LCS), with runner-ups and the winner of the PCS (South East Asia) filling out the pools two and three. The fourth pool will consist of the teams from the Play-Ins.

More League of Legends:

Each group will feature a team from each pool with the limitation that teams from the same region cannot meet each other in the group stage.

Seeding for Worlds 2020

Past Worlds have often featured groups of death and 2020’s edition might prove no different. Make sure to tune in on September 15 05:00 PT/ 14:00 CEST to see the group draw.
