Interview with GrabbZ: “The Problem of the Western teams was, that they could not bootcamp or scrim in Asia because of Covid”

At the recent Equal Esports Festival in Berlin we had the opportunity to talk to the German coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann, who had last been the head coach for G2 in the LEC before being benched after their disappointing finish in the Summer Split.

Video – Interview with GrabbZ on the Western teams’ performance at Worlds and his ideal player

Why did the Western Teams underperform at Worlds?

Of course one of the topics we talked to him about was the underperformance of the Western teams in Iceland. While there are multiple reasons at work here, for GrabbZ the main problem was the lack of experience Western teams have with the LCK and the LPL teams.

The Problem of the Western Teams was, that they could not bootcamp or scrim in Asia because of Covid.

From his point of view the first two weeks of playing at Worlds are the hardest as Western teams have to acknowledge just how behind they are in the meta before they can improve. As this year the teams were unable to gather the required experience through a bootcamp the runner-up coach of 2019 did not seem too surprised.

Which three key attributes do LoL players need to compete at the very top?

League of Legends is a very difficult game to play at the highest level, so we asked GrabbZ what exactly would be the attributes of his ideal LoL player. The German coach listed three core aspects:

  • Ability to take criticism well and admit mistakes
  • Great communication skills
  • Quick fingers to cover the mechanics of LoL

Make sure to keep these in mind the next time you are trying to improve your MMR. Of course we also tried coaxing out which team he is headed to next, but unfortunately we did not get any comment on that.
