Rainbow Six Caster Jess quits streaming due to toxicity
Jessica “Jess” Bolden is part of the established casters and analysts in the Rainbow Six community, having also worked at the Six Invitational. Besides the analyst desk she also frequently streamed on her Twitch channel until now.
Sexism and Toxicity reaching a breaking point
On Twitter Jess posted a video in which she explained, why she will not stream Rainbow Six until further notice.
A statement regarding me streaming Siege into the near future. Thanks for understanding. pic.twitter.com/ACFWiGua2M
Main culprit for her decision is the increasingly toxic behavior of her viewers. “If you’ve been watching me recently, you will have seen that it’s become almost impossible for me to stream in the Oceanic region,” she stated. “Toxicity is a nightmare. If you were watching today, I got threatened with severe sexual assault. The N-word was raining left, right and center.” It has basically become impossible for her to stream without emotional toll on herself.
For now she will stop streaming Rainbow Six for the next week and is looking at other FPS titles instead. Whether or not her hiatus is permanent is unclear as of now.
Support from the scene
Jess has received support from the community in her decision. Fellow commentator Parker Mackay tweeted the following in a follow up:
The past 6 to 8 months have been the absolute worst for streaming/playing R6. The game is in a pretty fun spot but holy shit the community has been dreadful. Streamsniping is at an all time high and toxicity has exploded. I don’t get it and don’t know what can be done to fix it.
While toxicity in games is an age-old problem in gaming, Rainbow Six seems to have reached a sad new peak in online harrassment as prominent community members decide they are better off not streaming the game.
