With a recent resurgence in Reddit threads accusing the League of Legends developer of making balance decisions based on soon-to-be-released skins, senior game designer Matt “phroxz0n” Leung-Harrison has issued a statement categorically denying the claims.
There have been quite a few conspiracy theories throughout League’s lifespan, but the one revolving around the correlation between champion skins, and champion buffs to increase player spending has been one of the longest-running theories.
Quite a few players persist in thinking that Riot Games factors in “paying more attention to balance for popular champions that have a skin coming out”. Phroxz0n was quick at debunking that train of thoughts.
“ revenue is not even remotely a consideration for people making gameplay changes and I’ve been on the team since season 4, including the live gameplay era. Sometimes skins come out and I didn’t even know they were in development, so I wouldn’t agree with this take at all,” he replied.
Although it does seem somewhat far-fetched to think that different departments within the company would be so well coordinated -everyone who has ever worked at a big company knows how famously uncoordinated they really are-, it is a fact that Riot Games heavily relies on the revenue of skin sales to turn a profit.
With the recent stellar rise of its animation series Arcane, Riot has found another source for the creation of more skins. This will give the fans the perfect opportunity to put their theory to the test, and see if the champions receiving such an Arcane skin, would be getting a buff.
More League of Legends:
- New League of Legends Arcane skins released
- 3 Characters from Arcane that could become League of Legends Champions
