Riot Games changes up VALORANT Champions Tour Challengers Qualifier format

After being criticized by some of the participating organizations, Riot Games has changed up the format of the VALORANT Champions Tour Challengers somewhat.

It seems like Riot Games has taken some of the criticism stemming forth from the community to heart. Following the results of the first edition, which saw some upsets during best-of-one matches, a lot of fans, teams and players alike complained to Riot Games about the fairness of having only a best-of-one to prove their worth. Riot Games has now reacted to the criticism and changed up the format a little bit.

They talked about it more in a blog post. “After receiving valuable community and competitor feedback on the first weekend of VALORANT Challengers, we took some time to optimise the format for the Challengers qualifiers. The changes will be in effect from the next qualifying phase starting on Tuesday, 16 February, in EU and Tuesday, 23 February, in CIS and TR.”

From now on the best-of-three matches will already make their way into the tournament after the round of 128, instead of the round of 32 like before. Everything up to the round of 256 will remain best-of-one, to still give newer teams a chance. “By implementing the changes above we aim to reward consistency and reduce randomness. We want results to have more weight, be it in victory or defeat.”
