Rogue back to the top & what is happening to G2 Esports? – LEC Week 4 Recap
The LEC has reached the halfway point of the regular season in the Summer Split. This time around, not everything is turning out as expected.
This Summer Split started out with a lot of questions that still needed to be answered and even the most veteran LEC fan or analist had a difficult time predicting which players or which teams we would see on top of the standings. With a bunch of teams going through roleswaps or altered line-ups, the Summer Split has provided a lot of fresh faces and some good-old fashioned chaos so far.
Rogue climbs back to the top
Rogue went into week 4 with a solid opportunity to get ahead of Misfits Gaming once again, who have been soaring on top of the standings for a couple weeks now. They went on to face bottom-ranked SK Gaming and a rather insecure MAD Lions line-up, who’ve been struggling ever since returning from MSI 2021. While the match against SK Gaming turned into a 26-minute stomp, MAD Lions proved to be a more difficult opponent.

10) #SKWIN (1-8)— Rogue (@ROGUE) July 5, 2021
They won out after a 41-minute struggle, where players such as jungler Inspired and especially mid laner Larssen proved their importance for this Rogue squad with strong performances on Volibear and Orianna respectively. On the side of MAD Lions, Armut struggled to get anything going on the carry Camille pick and mid laner Humanoid wasn’t able to turn the tide with the Akali.
It’s good news for Rogue who after a 2-0 weekend climb back to the top of the standings, after beating out Misfits Gaming in week 2 of the Summer Split. While MAD Lions haven’t been as dominant as we’ve seen them during the end of the playoffs last split, they do look to be on track and certainly still compete with the best. It seems likely they’ll close out the split making playoffs.
Uncharacteristically bad performances for G2 Esports
Their bad performances in week 3, where they went 0-2, looked like a fluke and every fan was sure that they’d recover for the upcoming week, especially facing an opponent such as Excel. Well, things turned out a whole lot differently. Excel has been positively soaring since the addition of jungler Markoon and support Advienne, two players who love taking risks and play without fear, keeping G2 Esports in check.

This time around however, G2 Esports got beat out in the bot lane and, more importantly perhaps, the mid lane. Caps had an awful game on the Sylas, getting outperformed consistently by the LeBlanc of Nukeduck, who’s been performing very well recently. It looks like the individual talent at G2 Esports has been lacking and is not showing up. A lot of it looks to be due to a lack of cohesion as well, as G2 Esports sometimes looks lost on the map.
Their season is by no means doomed however even despite the loss to Misfits Gaming on the second day, G2 Esports currently sit in a shared 5th place with Vitality, Astralis and Excel at a 4-5 record. There’s still more than enough time to turn things around and it certainly isn’t the first time that G2 Esports underperformed during the regular season, only to win it all later on when it matters.
Astralis to the stars
After a dip in form the past two weeks, Astralis looks to be back on track. They faced two opponents who’ve been in similar form lately, namely Team Vitality and Schalke 04, and made the most of the chances they got. Against Vitality they blew out the entire Vitality roster in a bonkers teamfight, going on to finish the game convincingly at the 23-minute mark, with big roles for mid laner MagiFelix on Akali and bot laner Jeskla on Aphelios.

Their brawl against Schalke 04 was a little more dense and drawn out. This time around Zanzarah struggled a little on the Gragas jungle, but his laners were able to find advantages throughout the game, with top laner WhiteKnight having an especially big role on the Lee Sin, rocking a 7/0/7 scoreline. WhiteKnight has been having a great season so far and seems to have found his groove within Astralis.
Other results
Fnatic ended up finishing week 4 with a 1-1 scoreline, dropping a game to Schalke 04 only to pull one back against SK Gaming. They still sit comfortably in third place in the standings and have been doing better than many people expected. Finally SK Gaming faced another 0-2 week and are stuck at the bottom of the table. Unfortunately for them, there seems to be little chance of escaping that spot.
