Sony buys developer Bungie in deal worth over $3.5 billion
Bungie shared a blog post about joining up with Sony and talked about what the move will mean for their games and the development of them in the future, ensuring fans they’ll remain independent. “In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart.”
Bungie has limitless potential to unite friends around the world.
We have found a partner in PlayStation that shares our dream and is committed to accelerating our creative vision of building generation-spanning entertainment.
PlayStation and Sony similarly released a blog post detailing more information about the acquisition, with Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst chiming in. “I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own.We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team.” It’s clear that we might see more of this kind of acquisitions in the future, as we’ve seen multiple of them recently. With Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard and Take-Two buying Zynga, Sony acquiring Bungie might just be the latest in a slew of upcoming moves we’ve yet to see.
Bungie is mostly known for orginating the Halo games and, more recently, the Destiny games. They used to be a part of Microsoft Studios in the past, as they were bought out by Microsoft in 2000, before becoming indepent once again in 2007.
