A strong tournament showing turned into a disappointing final for the new roster of FunPlus Phoenix, as they found themselves swept with a 3-0 scoreline by Team Spirit at DreamHack Open Europe January 2021.
Team Spirit crowned themselves as the winners of Dreamhack Open Europe January following a convincing win over FunPlus Phoenix. One of the biggest factors of their win was without a doubt Abdul “degster” Gadanov, currently on loan at Team Spirit from ESPADA, who played an insanely strong series. The Russian organization had a very strong showing throughout the tournament as a whole, eliminating BIG in a huge series in the semifinals after going 2-1 in their group following a loss to Gambit Esports.
The final itself was disappointing for FunPlus Phoenix, who recently put a new roster behind their organization led by Chris “ChrisJ” De Jong, who joined them on loan. FunPlus Phoenix contracted multiple members of the former GODSENT roster and played their first tournament with the new roster. Despite not winning the Grand Final, there’s no denying there’s still quite a bit of upside to the team and roster.
Team Spirit takes home $35.000 in winnings for their first place finish, as well as 100 ESL Pro Tour points. FunPlus Phoenix took home 15.000$ and 80 ESL Pro Tour points.
