The 2020 LEC off-season: who came out strongest?

The 2020 off-season has been a rollercoaster thus far. Not only did we see the retirement of the most veteran players in the LCS, in the LEC we saw G2 Esports have the better of Fnatic once again. This time, they picked up their prime marksman Rekkles to join their new star-studded line-up. This might be the strongest Western line-up yet! But which team will be able to challenge them in the LEC and how? And most importantly: which LEC teams have become stronger and who got weaker?
*As of the time of writing not all rosters have been confirmed. The analysis below might be subject to change as not every team could be fully assessed.
Europe’s strongest

Now that we have a global idea of what the line-ups will look like, it feels like there is already one clear favourite to win it all: G2 Esports. Their only position that had question marks surrounding it, was the marksman position. Now that void is filled up with possibly the greatest marksman Europe has ever seen, it feels like their only enemy could potentially be themselves. G2 Esports is known to take things less seriously in the Spring & Summer splits but will always ramp up when playoffs are around the corner.

Any challengers?

Europe has been dominated by G2 Esports for the past year and it looks like that will not change for 2021. However there are teams that can potentially pose a threat. One of those teams is of course Fnatic as, historically, Fnatic has always been G2 Esports’ biggest rival in Europe. They fought in multiple finals and all EU’s titles are divided amongst these two teams (and one for Alliance). With the addition of Nisqy and Upset, Fnatic are a force to be reckoned with but there are still some questions being raised about their line-up. Is Nisqy washed up from NA? Can Upset fill these big shoes that Rekkles left him? Will Yamato bring more diversity to this team?

The only other team that look like they have a shot at the kings is Rogue. They have a major upgrade in the top lane, adding veteran player Odoamne to their roster to replace the widely inconsistent Finn. Inspired, Larssen and Hans sama already form a strong trifecta within the team and are considered the core of this roster. Trymbi will have a lot of guidance from veteran players in this line-up to overcome his lack of experience but we can only wonder if he can keep up with the other LEC supports.

Fishing in the talent pool

Some line-ups have invested in rookie talents from the ERL-scene. Fnatic may have imported a Belgian midlaner from NA but SK Gaming have done the same with Blue from the TCL. He has been a very consistent mid laner over there and has shown great potential in a line-up that was not even in the finals of their League. Combined with Treatz being added from NA as well, this already strong line-up upgraded overnight.

Lastly, they added TynX. A promising jungler in the ERLs and especially in the LFL where he outclassed most of his opponents. SK Gaming was already a strong team going into the 2020 Summer Playoffs and it would take a lot to replace Crownshot, who will not be returning in 2021 with the team. Nevertheless, SK has shown the willingness to take risks and import players back to EU.

Excellent decisions

The last team we will be talking about is Excel. They claimed the best mid laner from last EU Masters and made him a starter in their roster. Combined with an experienced bot lane and promising topside (Dan & Kryze), this team’s ceiling is unknown. Not only is their LEC Line-up full of strong players, they also have a crazy talented Academy roster from which they can swap players to find the best possible line-up for the 2021 season. It feels like Excel might finally give us what they promised us last year!

Missed A Team?

Of course, there are a lot of changes to other teams, but these stood out the most to us. If you think we missed something or if you see something we do not, be sure to leave a comment or tweet at us.
