The Elephant in the Room – China’s DPC Upper Division 2021 Preview
The Dota 2 world is gearing up for the restart of the Dota Pro Circuit and China is of course not an exception to that. The giants of the East are ready to put on quite the show.
While the recent lifetime bans against Newbee have overshadowed the start of the DPC, China’s Dota 2 elite has quietly prepared for the resumption of the Pro Circuit. With a TI dry spell of two years now, China is more than hungry for the coveted Aegis of Champions.
The Elephant in the Room
Amidst the transition to the online competitions of 2020 a rumor made its rounds about a new superstar team in China. After Elephant finally formed at the end of a transfer odyssey their first outing was a rocky fifth/sixth place, but since then they took the last two Chinese tournaments of 2020 and are more than ready to fulfill the expectations on them. Joining Elephant in the Upper Division will be a group of familiar faces from the scene.
Eager to show that they are not afraid of the Chinese superteam PSG.LGD, Vici Gaming and EHOME are also strong contenders for the first DPC season in China. Especially Vici and LGD will have a score to settle with Elephant as they had gutted their teams respecitviely during their formation.
New blood joining the fray
One of the strengths of the Chinese region had always been the depth of its talent pool and 2021 seems to be no exception to that as a bunch of upstarts have taken over the old guard.
The four teams from the qualifiers hit that fact home quite well. While Aster and Invictus Gaming are familiar teams, Team MagMa and LBZS are a surprise for the Upper Division. In the course of qualifying they managed to take down RNG and Sparking Arrow, who are more known to the casual fan.
It is unlikely for them to be able to challenge the big four on top right now, but it proves once more that the Chinese Dota 2 scene is brimming with talent that only rarely gets the spotlight. Make sure to tune in on January 19th to see Vici Gaming take on LBZS to kick off the season.
