What is a starter item?
Starter items are its own class of items in League of Legends. They differ fundamentally from basic items, because basic items can be used to build other items while starter items can’t. Starter items are often bought at the start of the game and provide useful bonuses when starting up the match. We won’t be talking about the jungle here, as it’s a different beast.
Doran’s items
The Doran items are some of the most recognizable and most-used starting items in the game, as they offer options for both physical (Blade) and magical damage (Ring) as well as some resistances and sustain (Shield).
- Doran’s Blade
- Doran’s Ring
- Doran’s Shield
Support items
Support players also have their own items to start out the game with. First there’s Spectral Sickle and Spellthief’s edge, which reward support players who like to harass enemies, giving them gold for hitting enemy champions with abilities. The difference is in AD and AP damage. There’s also Relic Shield and Steel Shoulderguards for melee supports and offer more survivability.
- Spectral Sickle / Spellthief’s Edge
- Relic Shield / Steel Shoulderguards
Other options
There are other options available as starting items. Dark Seal is an item that banks on you being better than the opponent and can help snowball leads. Tear of the Goddess is preferred by ‘safer’ champions and can help out with managing mana (Ezreal is a great example). Cull is similar to Doran’s Blade but benefits passive players more while Corrupting Potion is an option when players are expected to trade heavily.
- Tear of the Goddess
- Dark Seal
- Corrupting Potion
- Cull
