Twitch investigating money laundering through their platform

Things kicked off when the payout information of streamers leaked in the big data leak a few weeks ago. Within that information some people have found a few Turkish streamers who went on to receive quite big amounts of bits, leading many to believe that Twitch is being used for money laundering. The theory and speculation has led Twitch to investigate the issue.

The channels that seem to be affected the most reside within the Turkish VALORANT scene. Even though a few of the channels have come forward to confirm that they’ve been receiving big amounts of bits, they deny any wrongdoing. Scammers would obtain or steal credit card information and send over money to streamers in the form of Bits, who would then refund 80% of the amount to different bank accounts, laundering the money.

According to Twitch they have been taking action against these kinds of practices in the past month, banning over 150 partners in Turkey in September alone. Many of the people who have reached out to Twitch or who were affected by these issues were also helped. Despite all this, many Turkish Twitch viewers are coming forward saying they’ve been affected by the scam, with some people even reporting losing over a 1000 dollars.
