What is a shiny Pokémon?
First and foremost, a shiny Pokémon is a different-colored variant of a regular Pokémon. For example a Charizard that’s suddenly completely black or an umbreon who’s got blue instead of yellow rings on his body. You’ll also know by the star icon above their name. Encountering one of these is rare, as the rate of encountering one in the wild lies somewhere in the 1 in 500 range.
How do I find them?
If you’re just simply hunting in the wild, the 1 in 500 range applies. However, there are exceptions. Some Pokémon, such as Togepi for example, have a 1 in 125 chance of being shiny, as it’s only found in 7KM eggs. Some Pokémon have a ‘permaboost’, increasing their chances of being shiny to 1 in 64 (current examples are alolan sandshrew and vulpix).
If there’s a Community Day, be on the lookout for the promoted event Pokémon. Their odds of being shiny will be increased to a whopping 1 in 25, making it a lot easier to find their shiny forms. Finally there’s legendary raids, where you can catch some of the legendary Pokémon. As these are harder to come by, the shiny rates for these Pokémon are increased to 1 in 20. You’ll need a raid pass to participate however, which kind of balances things out.
