The 4-1-2-1-2
This formation will give you quite a bit of stability all over the pitch, having players in dedicated roles and giving you multiple passing options either offensively or defensively. It’s a great option if you’ve got two strikers that pair up great, giving them a lot of liberty. With a creative CAM, you can either force the opponent to cover with a midfielder, or give you space, which can be deadly.
Be wary of formations that play through the midfield however, as your lack of coverage can put you in trouble.
The 4-4-2
One of the most classic formations out there and obviously for good reason, as it’s easily adaptable to many situations. It excels at spreading the field and playing a broad game, punching holes in otherwise defensive formations. Make sure to use pacey players who are capable of making the pass on the flanks.
In terms of weakness, the midfield can be easily exposed, especially when using midfielder who have a tendency to make forward runs. Make sure to utilize balanced midfielders who can have an impact offensively as well as defensively.
The 3-5-2 (or 3-5-1-1)
One of the more modern formations, packing the midfield and opening up many potential triangles. Great formation to keep the ball moving and build up quickly, exploiting the additional man in the midfield. It’s also great at neutralizing formations that only use on (often a big target man) striker.
Make sure to pack versatile players on the flanks who are quick to run back and defend but can go forward, as it’s one of the biggest weaknesses of the formation. Be sure to make your middle central defender a ball-playing one, as you’ll often go through him to reach the flanks or make simple forward runs.
