First, let’s recap which teams actually make it to Worlds 2021. The winner of the Summer Split automatically qualifies for the group stage at Worlds and so does the runner-up. As the LEC currently only has three slots, instead of the four we had last year, the team that ends up in third place will have to play through the play-ins to secure a spot in the group stage. Last year the LEC sent G2 Esports, Rogue and Fnatic to the group stage, with MAD Lions partaking in the play-in stage.
Right now the teams that are still in the running for a Worlds spot (or play-in spot) are Rogue, MAD Lions, G2 Esports, Misfits Gaming, Fnatic and Vitality.
Last year’s performance
Well, looking at the results from last year, the clear winners are G2 Esports and Fnatic who historically have performed pretty well at Worlds amidst the wealth of talent from LCK and LPL teams. Yet when we take a look at domestic results as well, there’s a lot more to the story and other LEC teams have proven to have risen to a new level. Let’s review each team and discuss how they would perform against the style of play from other regions.
We think Rogue is currently the best LEC team out there and they should be frontrunners for a Worlds spot. Of course we’ve still got quite a few weeks of playoffs to go, but their style of play seems to be undisputed in the LEC right now. Looking at their previous Worlds showing however, they swapped out Vander and Finn for Trymbi and Odoamne, which has been an upgrade so far. The only issue with Rogue we can foresee is them playing similar to LCK, which they’ve always done, but it wasn’t effective last time around. Now that they’ve gotten even better at it, we should see a better showing during groups as well.
2 – G2 Esports
Can’t argue with experience and G2 Esports has that in spades. They’re the most successful European League of Legends team without a doubt and their entire roster has a history of showing up big internationally. There’s something to be said about their domestic performance but G2 Esports has a history of falling low to bounce back high. We wouldn’t worry too much about it and we think there’s still a big chance G2 Esports goes on straight to the group stage.
MAD Lions didn’t perform all too well during the play-in stage of Worlds 2020, but they’ve grown up to become one of the best teams the LEC has to offer, winning Spring and competing at MSI 2021, where they performed admirably. One thing’s for certain. If MAD Lions reach Worlds again, it’ll be a different story than last time around, as they’ve matured and grown into their own.
4 – Fnatic / Misfits Gaming
Choosing between the best option for international competition between Fnatic and Misfits Gaming is a huge tossup. Both teams have young players eager to prove themselves flanked by experienced veterans that know how international play goes down. We think we’d give the edge to Fnatic over Misfits Gaming, if only slightly. Players like Bwipo and Hylissang have shown up big in the past and can prove to be valuable guides to the younger players.
Finally there’s Vitality. They don’t really boast a lot of international experience and haven’t gotten the chance to prove themselves domestically, barely making playoffs. They can perform very well, especially individually, but have struggled a lot with consistency. Yet, who knows? They might very well battle their way up in the LEC playoffs and perhaps reach the play-in stage. Nothing is impossible.
