Why fans are excited
Fans have been clamoring for a Pokémon game that feels a little more grand for years and it seems Legends: Arceus is answering that call. In a game with a seemingly semi-open world and what seems to be a more adult and dark story, many fans who’ve been saying that the Pokémon games have evolved into childish games that are just way too easy found a ray of hope. Can Legends: Arceus provide the hardcore fans with a challenge?
Revamping mechanics
While the turn-based combat in Pokémon has obviously become iconic, each generation has added a certain gimmick, and that formula has become rather stale. Legends: Arceus is revamping the battle system, putting more focus on attacking styles, adding new layers of strategy. It’ll be great to finally have something new to learn and dive into and while the changes may not work very well on a competitive PvP-level, it should certainly make the story a little more engaging.
Will Legends: Arceus be a turning point for the Pokémon franchise?
That’s a little early to say. It does seem however that Nintendo and Game Freak are holding on to their more traditional way of producing Pokémon games, having two parties of developers working on a main-line and a one-off game. The biggest issue that Pokémon has seen is a lack of in-game content and a lack of overall polish.
While it does seem they’re cramming more content in the game, it’s been obvious that polish is not something the Pokémon franchise does well. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were fun, sure, but were pushed towards a mobile game developer leading to a game riddled with (visual) bugs. The sentiment is there, giving the developers at Game Freak more time to finish up their game, but it’s obvious the current cycle just isn’t working. Chances are Legends: Arceus won’t bring us a new era of Pokémon games, especially with generation 9 already on the way. As long as the games sell, and quality doesn’t seem to be an issue, things will mostly stay the same.
